Van Hire Guide
What size of vehicle do you need?
What do you really need to take with you? Is it time to have a good clear out? Be realistic about how much stuff you have and measure large items. Check the load space of the vehicle and if you're in doubt hire a larger a van as it could save you from making repeated journeys costing you time and money. A larger vehicle may cost more initially but may be more economical in the long run. Also be aware of the weight limit of the van if you are moving heavy objects.
How many people are traveling in the van?
Make sure there are enough seats up front for all of your passengers. Some vans only have seating for two or three people so it is best to check before hiring. It is illegal and unsafe to carry passengers in the back unless there are seats with fitted seat belts provided.
Make sure you understand the jargon and have read terms and conditions
It is important that you have read the terms of your hiring agreement and understand what you can and can't do. Do this prior to signing the contract so you don't get caught short and end up with a hefty bill. Ask if you are unsure about any of the terminology. find out if you need to return the vehicle with a full tank of petrol.
Who will be driving the van?
You will need to ensure that all of the people who will be driving the van are insured. Most companies insist that the main driver pays for the vehicle themselves with a debit or credit card in their name (some places will only except a credit card). If one of your drivers is under 21 or not held their license for long check that there are no restrictions. Some firms will ask for a surcharge if you are under a certain age or have recent convictions. Also, importantly, make sure that you feel competent at driving a vehicle of that size. Make sure that you read our driving tips section beforehand as this will give you an idea of the difficulties and differences you will face when driving a larger vehicle.
What does the quoted price cover?
Check what insurance cover is included and whether or not you will have Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). Read our insurance section for further information and advice. If the vehicle is for business use, you may need to get your own insurance just ask the company. Check also if VAT has already been added onto the quoted price.
Check your vehicle before you leave the hire company site
You should check the van before driving off for any existing damages or scratches. This is normally carried out with a member of staff who will have a diagram of the van with any dents or marks highlighted. You can then both check the vehicle together and afterward you will be asked to sign to confirm that you have seen existing marks or dents that have been identified.
If the agreement states that the vehicle will be provided with a full tank of petrol then you should double check that it is full as promised.
Taking your vehicle outside of the UK
If you are planning to take the van outside of the UK, you must get permission from the hire company, do not just presume that it is OK!!! You will also need to make sure that your insurance is sufficient.
Remember as well to check the driving laws for the other country before you go. If you aren't used to driving a large vehicle, please consider if you feel safe enough to tackle a van of this size, on roads you are not used to and probably driving on the right hand side of the road.
